NARRATIVE

  1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.  MOANA - Equilibrium : The film opens up where we are on a Polynesian island. - Disequilibrium : A disruption occurs where the island is destroyed. - New Equilibrium : The island will be restored once the heart has been returned to its rightful place. 2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot. - Temporal Marker : In one of the first scenes, we can see bright light coming from around the baby. Task 1: Genre factsheets 1) What example is provided of why visual iconographies are so important? - Generic codes and conventions are the aspects of a text which the audience recognises as the shared characteristics of a genre.  PART 1,  APPLYING RECEPTION THEORY TO ADVERTS 1) What are the preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings for the RBK 50 Cent advert?   Preferred Readings:  The producer/creator intends to inspire us and have confidence in ourselves. The slogan ' I am what I am' helps achieve this.  Negotiated Readings:  From the fingerprints in the background, the producers intentions could've been to offer us a narrative of a possible criminal background or violence. Oppositional Readings:  The audience may be angry at Reebok as it might be thought that they are glorifying gang culture and crime and promoting it.  2)  What are the preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings for the advert of your own choice that you analysed for last week's work?
