NARRATIVE
1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.
MOANA
- Equilibrium : The film opens up where we are on a Polynesian island.
- Disequilibrium : A disruption occurs where the island is destroyed.
- New Equilibrium : The island will be restored once the heart has been returned to its rightful place.
- Temporal Marker : In one of the first scenes, we can see bright light coming from around the baby. Then the camera moves out where we can see the sky looking like the sun just rose.
- Geographical Marker : We can tell from the actors' accents that they are American so from that we can indicate that they are in the USA.
- Historical Marker : We can indicate that the show is set in modern time as there is a lot of technology around which wouldn't be available in later periods of time.
- Character Marker : We can tell that the main character is a superhero as he wears a costume which regular people wouldn't. Also he is seen saving people in a way regular people wouldn't, e.g. pushing a car away from hitting someone.
- Generic Marker : The audience can tell that the show they're watching is going to be an action drama as it has that superhero theme which is known to have a lot of action involved.
