MEDIA PAPER 1 MOCK EXAM LEARNER RESPONSE

1) Type up any feedback in full (you do not need to write mark/grade if you do not wish to).

WWW: Some really strong answers here with the potential to also make improvements in places for the summer.

EBI: Questions focus i places. E.g. genre in Q1. Q4 20 marker evaluation of theory. PRactice terminology + CSPs in places e.g. section b

2) Write a
question-by-question analysis of your performance. For each question, write how many marks you got from the number available and identify any points that you missed by carefully studying the AQA indicative content in the mark scheme.

- Q1: 3/8. Need genre theory, the use of mise en scène elements to denote aspects of genre, this advertisement makes heavy use of what Neale describes as ‘instances of repetition', the advertisement’s intertextual use of the visual codes and iconography associated with genres of order, eg spy thriller, action and sub-genres.

- Q2: 8/12. More from the unseen section, both products can be seen as simulated versions of reality featuring self-consciously stylised hyper-masculine constructions, both products appear to reinforce Van Zoonen’s notion of patriarchy with men represented as a dominant force to a greater or lesser extent, reinforcing stereotypical ideas about the nature of male identity to the audience.

- Q3: 4/9. Need specific evidence from the CSP. Positive: young people open minded, diverse + unified challenging authority. Negative: Chaotic driving, aimless, unemployed (chucking rocks into the Thames), fighting.

- Q4: 8/20. Need more evaluation of binary oppositions and culture. Score: Pretty valid, 1960s a more binary world + Score advert uses these binary oppositions to communicate messages. Sephora: elements of binary opposition-Black/White BUT overall reflects less binary opposition so Levi - Strauss is less valid.

- Q5: 2/3. Deregulation. 0/3. Repurposing of media products e.g. memes, fan fiction and parody.

- Q6: 3/9. Need specific evidence from BBTL. Answer Q: audience expectations - trailer, film industry + importance of cinema box office- big opening weekends. BBTL: premiers in London, Luton + New Jersey. Film festival: Sundance + Cannes. Global marketing campaign of posters and trailers. Interview on The One Show.

- Q7: 13/20. Need to focus on question. Newsbeat has also needed to compete with the style and content of popular commercial radio programming as well as emergent user-generated content such as podcasting aimed at youth audiences; it has therefore attempted to stay fresh and relevant since its inception in 1973. The subsequent mythic qualities of this text and its entirely unexpected and unsought longevity might be thought to challenge the premise of the question. The War of the Worlds as both a genre piece and a novel adaptation is a very
different kind of product: more of a ‘one off’!

3) Look at Question 4 - a 20-mark essay evaluating Levi-Strauss's binary opposition theory. Write an essay plan for this question using the indicative content in the mark scheme and with enough content to meet the criteria for Level 4 (top level). This will be somewhere between 3-4 well-developed paragraphs plus an introduction answering the question planned in some detail.

P: Score is pretty valid.
E: 1960s was a more binary world.
E: The man provides a focus for a number of oppositions: male-female, masculine-feminine, clothed-unclothed, dominant-dependent, top-bottom.
L: Score advert uses these binary oppositions to communicate messages.

4) Based on the whole of your Paper 1 learner response, plan FIVE topics / concepts / CSPs / theories that you will prioritise in your summer exam Media revision timetable.

- War of the Worlds.
- Ghost Town.
- Theory of regulation.
- Theory of binary opposition.
- Theory of genre.
