MAGAZINE FRONT COVER PRACTICAL LEARNER RESPONSE

1) Add your finished magazine cover as a JPEG image.

2) Type up your feedback from your teacher. If you've received this by email, you can copy and paste it across - WWW and EBIs. You don't need to include a mark or grade if you don't want to.

WWW: You’ve clearly researched and planned this magazine which is such an important part of the production process. The magazine itself is clearly recognisable as a front cover and uses plenty of conventions – masthead, central image, cover lines etc. Focusing on the cover lines, I think they are well written and sound appropriate for the chosen magazine.

EBI: There are some key areas we can improve on for our real coursework next year. Firstly, you are missing one of the evaluation tasks at the end of the project. In terms of the magazine cover itself, I agree with your criticisms in terms of the image. Although the hair feature makes sense, I think you need direct address/eye contact on the front of a magazine. There are also some page design issues that hold this back from the top levels such as placement of the cover lines. In terms of font and typography, you’ve got a range of different fonts which is similar to the professional version of Black Beauty. However, I do think you need to be careful with using multiple fonts and perhaps just stick to two main fonts in your real coursework magazine. I also wouldn’t include page numbers on the cover. Finally, the barcode is huge – you want to make that as small and inconspicuous as possible so it doesn’t distract from the image or cover lines.

3) Consider your mark against the mark scheme above. What are the strengths of your production based on the the mark scheme? Think about magazine cover conventions and the media language techniques you have used to communicate with your audience (e.g. mise-en-scene, camera shot etc.)

- use of conventions

- focus on cover lines.

4) Look at the mark scheme again. What can you do to move your mark higher and, if required, move up a level?

- stick to a few fonts
- minimise images
-placement issues
- direct address needed

5) What would be one piece of advice you would give a student about to start the same magazine cover project you have just completed?

- find a good model.
